"This cannot be zone without consequences." Ireland calls on EU to consider additional sanctions against russia over attack on Kyiv

Irish Defence Minister Simon Harris has called for a strong response to russia's shelling of Kyiv on the night of August 28, including the possibility of imposing additional sanctions.

He made the remarks in Copenhagen, where EU defence ministers are meeting this morning, The Guardian reports.

"I am absolutely appalled by russia's actions in relation to the attack on Kyiv and, of course, the attack on the European delegation office there. This cannot be a zone without consequences. I believe it is very important that the whole world, with one voice, expresses absolute condemnation of russia's clear violation of the Vienna Convention," he said.

Harris also called for consideration of additional sanctions against russia: "It is also clear that while the world is talking about peace and how to achieve peace, dialogue and diplomacy to end the war in Ukraine, russia continues to carry out terrorist acts, attacking civilians, without showing any readiness for a ceasefire, and therefore, in my opinion, we, as members of the European Union, need to consider the possibility of imposing additional sanctions."

Earlier, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that the best guarantee of security for Ukraine would be NATO membership.

In addition, Lithuanian Minister Dovilė Šakalienė called for the imposition of secondary sanctions against russia and its partners, arguing that this would be the most effective way to stop the financing of the russian military machine.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, rescue operations have been completed at the site of the russian strike on a residential building in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv. The dismantling of the destroyed structures is underway. At this time, 22 people are known to have been killed in this single strike, including four children.

The russian attack damaged the EU mission in Kyiv, as well as the British Council building. A British Council guard was injured during the russian attack on Kyiv.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the country had summoned the russian Ambassador over the russian attack on Kyiv on the night of August 28.

In addition, the Bayraktar plant, built in Kyiv and ready for launch, was hit by a missile strike. Two hits on the target caused serious damage to the facility, which had been invested in millions of dollars.

Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said that US President Donald Trump was unhappy with russia's strikes on Kyiv on the night of August 28, but was not surprised.
