Court Finds No Violations During Kniazev's Detention

The High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) recognized the legality of National Anti-Corruption Bureau’s (NACB) detention of Supreme Court Chairman Vsevolod Kniazev, who was caught accepting a bribe in the amount of USD 2.7 million.

Such a decision was made by the HACC at the request of Kniazev's lawyer on May 17, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The investigating judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court refused to satisfy the complaint filed by the defense attorney of the former head of the Supreme Court against his detention.

The lawyer asked to declare the detention of the ex-head of the Supreme Court illegal.

The decision is not subject to appeal.

The full text of the resolution will be announced on May 19.

The HACC reminds that according to Part 1 of Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until his guilt is proven in a legal manner and established by a court verdict.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SACPO) applied to the High Council of Justice for permission to detain former Supreme Court Chairman Vsevolod Kniazev, who, together with his lawyer, is suspected of receiving USD 2.7 million in illegal benefits.

The SACPO informed Kniazev of suspicion of receiving a multimillion bribe.

Kniazev, whose authority as head of the court was terminated by the Plenum of the Supreme Court, expressing no confidence in him, remained as a judge of the Supreme Court.

The Plenum of the Supreme Court by 140 votes expressed no confidence in the head of the Supreme Court, Vsevolod Kniazev, who was exposed by the NACB for receiving USD 2.7 million in bribes. This decision was taken by the Plenum at an urgent meeting.

According to our sources in the law enforcement agencies, Vsevolod Kniazev is suspected of having received almost USD 3 million in bribes from people close to the businessman and former Member of Parliament Kostiantyn Zhevaho, who is on international wanted list, for a decision in his favor.
