Orbán says russia, Ukraine peace deal to be signed in Budapest

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said that an agreement to end the russian-Ukrainian war should be signed in Budapest, local publication Index reported.

In this context, he cited the Middle East peace deal reached after several days of talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, as an example of how an agreement can be reached. Orbán reportedly believes that a peace deal between Ukraine and russia will be signed in Budapest and that, despite the postponement, the summit will still take place. He said that peace can only be achieved with the participation of external forces, including the United States.

"Let's consider the scenario of the last such large-scale summit. It took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where peace in the Middle East was achieved under a roof, where the parties, including the Americans, negotiated for a long time, and then on Saturday they announced that the signing would take place on Monday. That's how you have to imagine it. And here, in 2-3 days, they can achieve peace or an agreement under a roof."

Orbán is convinced that peace in Ukraine requires the intervention of external forces, which should conclude an agreement with the russians. Although he named the US or Europe as potential mediators, the Prime Minister criticized Europe's unwillingness to negotiate with russia as a "catastrophic mistake." From this, he concludes that it is the US "who will decide the future of Ukraine."

"We would like European leaders to enter into direct contact with the russians, start negotiations and reach a russian-European agreement on the European security system, as well as on the future of Ukraine." Orbán is convinced that peace in Ukraine requires the intervention of external forces, which should conclude an agreement with the russians. Orbán also advocated that the EU not grant Ukraine membership after the war, but limit itself to establishing a strategic partnership.

"Let's not start a war, let's not waste money, but always sign agreements with Ukraine that will benefit it but will not be dangerous for us."

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Budapest is actively working to find ways to circumvent American sanctions imposed against russian oil giants, in particular Lukoil and Rosneft.

On October 16, US President Trump said that he had a phone conversation with putin. He and the russian dictator agreed to meet in Budapest. The Kremlin also confirmed the meeting between Trump and putin - Moscow said that it could take place within two weeks.

On October 21, it became known that the planned meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which was supposed to take place this week and be a preparatory stage for the talks in Budapest, was postponed indefinitely.

Then Trump explained why he canceled the meeting with putin, and also imposed sanctions against russia.
