Putin's special envoy arrives in US for talks after sanctions against russia - CNN

The head of the russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriev, has arrived in the United States for "official" talks amid the US's imposition of sanctions against the aggressor state of russia.

This was reported by CNN, citing sources familiar with the visit.

According to the sources, the Kremlin's special envoy Dmitriev is to meet with representatives of the Trump administration "to continue discussions on US-russia relations."

The visit comes after US President Donald Trump canceled a planned meeting with russian dictator vladimir putin in Budapest and imposed sanctions against russia.

The publication notes that Dmitriev is a supporter of the Kremlin for closer economic cooperation between russia and the US. He recently proposed building a "Trump-putin" tunnel between Alaska and the russian Far East.

It is stated that Dmitriev was born in Kyiv during the Soviet era, was educated at Harvard and Stanford in the United States, worked as a consultant at the American consulting firm McKinsey and as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs.

After russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Dmitriev was subject to sanctions by the US Department of the Treasury, which recognized him as a "close associate of putin" and his family. In 2022, the Department of the Treasury wrote that "putin and his inner circle have long relied on RDIF and Dmitriev to raise funds abroad, including in the United States."

In April, Dmitriev became the first russian official to visit Washington since russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In April, a source told CNN that the US government had temporarily lifted sanctions against Dmitriev so that the Department of State could issue him a visa to enter the United States.

As a reminder, on October 21, it became known that the planned meeting between US Secretary of State Mark Rubio and russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which was supposed to take place this week and be a preparatory stage for the talks in Budapest, has been postponed indefinitely.

Trump explained why he canceled the meeting with putin, and also imposed sanctions against the russian federation. The russian dictator also expressed his version of the disruption of the meeting in Budapest.

The US has imposed sanctions against leading russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. The restrictions are aimed at increasing economic pressure on the Kremlin due to its war against Ukraine.

The White House explained that Trump imposed sanctions against russia against the background of the cancellation of the meeting with putin due to insufficient steps by russia to promote a peaceful settlement of the russian-Ukrainian war. Regarding the meeting itself, Trump said that he "does not want to waste time."
