US President Donald Trump has explained why he canceled his meeting with russian dictator vladimir putin and said that "the time has come" for new sanctions against russia. He said this during a talk with journalists at the White House.
He said the talks would not have led to the desired result.
"We canceled the meeting with President Putin — it just didn’t feel right to me. It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get. So I canceled it, but we’ll do it in the future," Trump said.
He noted that a meeting with the russian leader could take place in the future, but did not provide additional details.
"Every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don’t go anywhere. They just don’t go anywhere," the US president added.
As for the sanctions against russia, Trump added that the long-awaited time for the sanctions has come.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Trump called the information that the United States had given Ukraine permission to conduct long-range strikes against russia fake.
On October 16, US President Trump said he had a phone conversation with putin. He and the russian dictator agreed to meet in Budapest.
The kremlin also confirmed the meeting between Trump and putin and said that it could take place within two weeks.
Some EU leaders want to attend the meeting between the US president and russian dictator in Budapest, as well as secure a seat at the negotiating table for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Meanwhile, a scheduled meeting between US Secretary of State Mark Rubio and russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, that was supposed to take place this week has been postponed indefinitely.
