The United States has imposed new sanctions on russia's leading oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. The restrictions are aimed at increasing economic pressure on the kremlin over its war against Ukraine. It was reported by the US Treasury Department.
The new sanctions are designed to weaken russia's energy sector and limit the kremlin's ability to generate profits that are used to finance the war and support the weakened economy.
"The United States will continue to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the war, and a permanent peace depends entirely on Russia’s willingness to negotiate in good faith. Treasury will continue to use its authorities in support of a peace process," the US Treasury Department said.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called on the kremlin to immediately declare a ceasefire.
"Given President Putin’s refusal to end this senseless war, Treasury is sanctioning Russia’s two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin’s war machine. Treasury is prepared to take further action if necessary to support President Trump’s effort to end yet another war. We encourage our allies to join us in and adhere to these sanctions," the Treasury Secretary said.
The sanctions lists also include more than 30 russian subsidiaries of Rosneft and Lukoil.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the US Senate has temporarily suspended consideration of a bill on new sanctions against russia - the decision was made at the request of the White House, which wants to wait for the results of Donald Trump's meeting with vladimir putin.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that now is not the right time to impose new sanctions against the aggressor country russia, as it could negatively affect the upcoming meeting with vladimir putin.
