The General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has adopted an important resolution obliging the russian federation to immediately de-occupy the Zaporizhzhia NPP and return it to full control of Ukraine.
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has reported this on Telegram.
The document entitled "Nuclear Safety, Physical Nuclear Security and Safeguards in Ukraine" was supported by 62 Agency member states. It contains a direct call on moscow to withdraw all military and other unauthorized formations from the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, as well as to ensure its demilitarization.
The resolution emphasizes that all nuclear facilities in Ukraine must operate under the sovereign control of Ukrainian authorities, and the IAEA mission must continue uninterrupted work at the station, despite the constant attempts of the russian side to limit its activities.
"62 votes in favor are a clear signal from the civilized world: nuclear terrorism is absolutely unacceptable, and the Zaporizhzhia NPP occupied by Russia must be immediately returned to the control of Ukraine," said Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk.
She emphasized that the resolution is yet another proof that the international community is closely monitoring the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, and every shelling or incident will be recorded and brought to the international level.
The Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest in Europe, it consists of six power units of the Soviet design. Since March 4, 2022, the facility has been under russian occupation and has repeatedly been left without electricity due to shelling. Only on September 17, the IAEA team recorded several explosions near the station.
Kyiv emphasizes that the adoption of this resolution is an important step towards restoring nuclear safety on the continent and increases international pressure on moscow to return the Zaporizhzhia NPP to Ukrainian control.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the night of September 9-10, two dozen drones flew near the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne NPPs during a massive air attack.
And on August 12, a large-scale fire broke out on the territory of the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP. Later, it turned out that it did not affect the change in the radiation background.
In total, since the beginning of 2025, more than 500 missiles and drones of various types have been recorded flying in the immediate vicinity of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
