Ukraine needs to import record 5 billion cubic meters of gas due to russian attacks – Bloomberg

Ukraine may import a record 5 billion cubic meters of gas from Europe due to russian attacks on energy infrastructure and depletion of reserves.

Ekonomichna Pravda reported this with reference to Bloomberg.

“We believe that Ukraine will need up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas in the season from April 2025 to April 2026,” said Dmytro Sakharuk, CEO of D.Trading, DTEK’s trading division.

This is significantly more than the maximum 1 billion cubic meters in previous seasons, he added in an interview at the Financial Times Global Commodities Summit.

According to him, the country has already used up its gas buffer reserves due to russian attacks.

“These reserves need to be restored. Therefore, the volumes here are also quite significant,” Sakharuk noted.

The report said the latest attacks have significantly reduced gas production by the state-owned Naftogaz by a third.

This has forced Ukraine to purchase expensive fuel from the EU.

“Even if the attacks stop, it will take some time to normalize production,” Sakharuk stressed, adding that new attacks cannot be ruled out.

It is noted that the gas market is becoming increasingly tense, and prices in Europe are rising ahead of the stockpiling season.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Ukraine plans to increase natural gas imports in the next heating season due to damage to its own production facilities as a result of russian drone and missile attacks.

During February 2025, Ukraine imported 511.8 million cubic meters of natural gas, which is the highest monthly volume in 1.5 years, since September 2023.

Ukraine plans to import up to 800 million cubic meters of natural gas from Europe in February and March to compensate for a 40% drop in production after missile strikes by the aggressor country russia.

According to Andrii Zhupanin, a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Servant of the People faction and deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on energy and housing and communal services, there should be enough gas to last and complete the current heating season in Ukraine, but for the next one, it will need to be imported.
