Gas imports in February increased to maximum in 1.5 years - 512 million cubic meters

In February 2025, Ukraine imported 511.8 million cubic meters of natural gas, which is the highest monthly volume in 1.5 years, since September 2023.

This is announced by the ExPro publication, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Compared to January 2025, gas imports increased 12 times.

The report says that the largest amount of gas was imported from Slovakia - 234.4 million cubic meters or 45.8% of all import supplies.

In addition, 218 million cubic meters (42.6%) were imported from Hungary, and 59.5 million cubic meters (11.6%) from Poland.

It is noted that most of the natural gas was imported to the “bonded warehouse” of Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities - 401 million cubic meters, of which 188.1 million cubic meters were imported via short-haul services, and 110.8 million cubic meters were imported directly to the Ukrainian GTS.

The significant increase in natural gas imports in February is due to a number of factors, the main of which is the reduction in Ukrainian production after russian attacks at the beginning of the month.

During the month, russia repeatedly attacked gas production facilities, which led to a reduction in production.

Also, in February, demand for natural gas was higher due to the fact that cold weather persisted in Ukraine.

The main importer of gas was Naftogaz Group, as well as private companies that imported gas for Ukrtransgaz.

It is worth noting that in preparation for the next heating season, Ukraine needs to significantly increase its natural gas imports.

According to DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko, imports should amount to 1-2 billion cubic meters.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, at the beginning of last month, the Naftogaz group urgently purchased about 150 million cubic meters of gas in the European Union for February.

Ukraine plans to import up to 800 million cubic meters of natural gas from Europe in February and March to compensate for the 40% drop in production after missile strikes by the aggressor country of russia.

According to Andrii Zhupanyn, a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Servant of the People faction, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on energy and housing and communal services, gas should be enough to complete and complete the current heating season in Ukraine, but for the next one, it will need to be imported.
