Ukraine plans to import 800 million cubic meters of gas due to russian strikes – Reuters

Ukraine plans to import up to 800 million cubic meters of natural gas from Europe in February and March to compensate for a 40% drop in production after missile strikes by the aggressor country russia.

Reuters reported this on Friday, February 21, citing a senior industry source.

In recent weeks, russia has intensified attacks on Ukrainian gas fields. Naftogaz and DTEK said that russia attacked and damaged their facilities at least twice in February. Ukraine began increasing gas imports in early February, and since then volumes have increased almost 10-fold to more than 20 million cubic meters per day. Ukraine's main gas production facilities are vulnerable to russian attacks, as they are located in the frontline Kharkiv and Poltava Regions.

"We could do without imports this heating season, but the attacks on production are forcing us to import gas to compensate for this reduction in domestic production," the source said on condition of anonymity.

The source said that Ukraine has low gas reserves in storage, but with planned imports and domestic gas production, it will be able to get through the heating season without any restrictions for industry and households. According to the publication, it is currently unclear how much gas Ukraine will have to import after March, as this will depend on the level of local production, which will be affected by the intensity of russian missile attacks.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, gas production in Ukraine has decreased by 40% after the russian missile strikes.

On February 20, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko reported that on the night of February 20, the aggressor country russia carried out another massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine's gas infrastructure.

Slovakia will be guaranteed to supply Ukraine with 42 million cubic meters of gas per day until spring 2026.
