Ukraine plans to increase natural gas imports in the next heating season due to damage to its own production facilities due to attacks by russian drones and missiles.
Ekonomichna Pravda reported this with reference to Bloomberg.
The report states that the government estimates the need for imports at 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas, although the final volumes may change depending on the circumstances.
This may create additional pressure on the European market, which is already in a tense state.
The purchases will take place in conditions of high competition for fuel and maintaining high prices, as Europe is also actively replenishing its reserves.
It is noted that previously Ukraine traditionally imported large volumes of gas, but after the full-scale russian invasion in 2022, it significantly reduced purchases due to reduced domestic consumption.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Ukraine imported 511.8 million cubic meters of natural gas in February 2025, which is the highest monthly volume in 1.5 years, since September 2023.
Ukraine plans to import up to 800 million cubic meters of natural gas from Europe in February and March to compensate for the 40% drop in production after missile strikes by the aggressor country russia.
According to Andrii Zhupanin, a Member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Servant of the People faction, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on energy and housing and communal services, gas should be enough to pass and complete the current heating season in Ukraine, but for the next one, it will need to be imported.
