Mike Waltz, who was appointed as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's national security adviser, said that Greenland is important to the national security of the United States.
He said this during an interview, Reuters reports.
Thus, he said this, commenting on Donald Trump's words that the United States should take control of the island.
"You have Russia that is trying to become king of the Arctic, with 60-plus ice breakers, some of them nuclear power. We have two, and one just caught on fire," he said.
Waltz added: " This is about critical minerals. This is about natural resources. This is about, as the polar ice caps pullback, the Chinese are now cranking out ice breakers and pushing up there as well. So it's oil and gas. It's our national security."
As a reminder, on December 23, Trump stated that possession and control of the huge island is an absolute necessity for the United States.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Trump also did not rule out the possibility of using military force to establish control over Greenland or the Panama Canal.
After that, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot warned U.S. President-elect Donald Trump against threatening the "sovereign borders" of the European Union.
At the same time, Trump's son made a private visit to Greenland.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that Greenland could become independent if its residents wanted to, but it is unlikely to become a U.S. state.
