Trump claims US needs to control Greenland

The U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has said that Washington needs to establish control over Greenland, which is currently the territory of Denmark. The politician wrote about this on his social network Truth Social.

Trump wants to buy Greenland from Denmark. Trump made the corresponding statement in the context of the announcement of the appointment of a new U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. According to Trump, possession of the island is an "absolute necessity" for the United States "for purposes of National Security and freedom around the world."

"For purposes of national security and Freedom throughout the world, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States. Thank you, Ken, and congratulations!” Trump wrote, thereby naming one of the priorities of the new ambassador.

During his first presidential term, the Republican had already expressed his desire to buy Greenland. Then the Danish authorities called the idea absurd and replied that the island was not for sale. Due to the refusal, Trump then canceled a trip to Denmark. He emphasized that Greenland brings multimillion-dollar losses to Denmark every year, and is strategically interesting for the United States.

Greenland is also attractive in political and economic terms, as it is located in the Arctic and is rich in natural resources, including gold, silver, copper, uranium, oil.

Politically, Greenland belongs to Denmark, but geographically it is part of North America. The area of the island state is 2.16 million sq. km. The population is about 76,200 people. Until 1953, Greenland was a Danish colony, later it was part of the kingdom, and in 2009 it received autonomy and the right to make independent decisions in terms of internal policy, but at the same time, as before, it remains the territory of Denmark.

As previously reported, Trump plans to appoint at least 13 billionaires to government positions.
