Due to the accident of two russian tankers with oil products, fuel oil pollution may reach the shores of Ukraine.
This was reported to Ukrainian Radio by the acting director of the scientific research institution Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology, Viktor Komorin.
Thus, it is reported that the pollution will not be limited to russian territories and may affect the Ukrainian coast, in particular Crimea.
"The impact, accordingly, will be not only on those territories that concern russia, but also on our Ukrainian territories. There is still a threat that some amount of oil products has reached the coast of Crimea. We still do not know this for sure," Komorin said.
To eliminate the fuel oil spill, oil stains are usually localized with special booms, after which they are collected by mechanisms or neutralized with chemicals, but there is still no information about whether such work is being carried out.
The expert explained that he could not provide a more accurate assessment because the situation is complicated by the lack of satellite data due to significant cloudiness in the region.
"We did a mathematical modeling, but with certain assumptions, since we do not have the exact coordinates of where these ships crashed. It should be noted that both of these ships had their AIS turned off - this is a global ship monitoring system. One of these ships had a shutdown 4 days before, and the other for more than a week. That is, we still do not know where they were at the time of the accident," he noted.
Recall that due to the tanker accident in the Kerch Strait, oil is spilling, the coast is polluted.
On December 15, it became known that an accident occurred in the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, with two russian tankers - Volgoneft-139 and Volgoneft-212.
Later, videos appeared on social media showing both tankers literally being torn apart by the waves. Greenpeace said the incident could spill 4,000 tons of fuel oil and other petroleum products, threatening the region with an environmental disaster that will last for years.
