Greenpeace warns of environmental disaster due to accident of 2 russian tankers in Kerch Strait

Representatives of Greenpeace Ukraine have stated that the accident of two russian tankers, which occurred on December 15 in the Kerch Strait, threatens an environmental disaster.

This is stated in a message on the organization’s website.

The organization stated that as a result of the accident of the russian tankers, 4,300 tons of fuel oil are currently spilling into the waters of the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

“Any oil or petrochemical spill in these waters has the potential to be serious. It is likely to be driven by prevailing wind and currents (moving now to the North-East) and in the current weather conditions is likely to be extremely difficult to contain,” Greenpeace Ukraine reported.

The organization noted that the severity of the consequences will depend on the type of oil or oil products currently spilling into the Kerch Strait.

If the tankers sink, there is a possibility of a long-term spill of oil and petrochemicals, which will lead to a significant impact on the environment.

The organization recalled that in 2007, an accident with a russian tanker resulted in a spill of 1,200 tons of fuel oil near the island of Tuzla. Damage from this incident was observed even a year after the accident.

As the Ukrainian News agency previously reported, earlier on December 15, it became known that two russian tankers were in trouble due to a storm in the Kerch Strait.

Videos posted on social networks show how storm waves literally cut one of the tankers into two parts.

Some time after that, the russians admitted that the second tanker was also sinking.
