The Minister of Defense of Poland Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that the creation of the Ukrainian Legion is under serious question, as only a small number of Ukrainians expressed a desire to join the unit.
Kosiniak-Kamysz made a corresponding statement on the air of Wirtualna Polska (WP).
He reminded that as part of the agreement concluded by the Ukrainian and Polish governments, a unit was to be formed in Poland. It was assumed that citizens of Ukraine residing in Poland and other European countries would join its ranks.
According to the agreement, the Ukrainian side was to be responsible for recruiting people, and the Polish side was to be responsible for training.
"The number of people who were supposed to come from the Ukrainian side was too small <...> These statements at the beginning were very high - that even one brigade could be formed, i.e. several thousand people. However, this did not happen," said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Recall that in July 2024, Ukraine and Poland signed a security agreement. One of its points provided for the formation of a Ukrainian Legion on the territory of Poland.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, it became known earlier that the Czech authorities are also considering the possibility of creating a unit of Ukrainian citizens who live in the country and are subject to conscription into the Ukrainian army.
