US President Donald Trump was particularly pleased to have been invited to the Palace of Versailles, near Paris, on the evening of June 17.
Le Figaro reported this.
“Versailles isn’t just gilded—it’s something serious,” Trump remarked with delight, known for his love of grandeur and gilding, which he spares no expense in incorporating into the White House’s decor.
He spoke about Macron’s invitation on the sidelines of the summit in Evian: “The President of France, who, by the way, is a very pleasant person, invited me to dinner at Versailles.”
Trump, who flew to the summit late Sunday night after celebrating his 80th birthday with a mega mixed martial arts show in the gardens of the presidential palace, acknowledged that this dinner near Paris would force him to leave France late at night once again.
“In any case, I’m not much of a sleeper,” he smiled.
Macron’s opponents criticize him for organizing this dinner “on a grand scale” to please Donald Trump.
“This isn’t a gala dinner. It’s a dinner marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, since France played an important role in that,” the French president replied on Monday.
At the same time, the publication notes that Macron also intends to ensure that Donald Trump, who left last year’s G7 summit in Canada early, “stays until the end.”
Officials in Paris emphasize that it was here that Louis XVI, while hosting Benjamin Franklin in 1778, pledged military support for the independence of the United States of America, and it was also here in 1783 that the Treaty of Independence was signed. The French are promising a “modest” working dinner attended by delegations from both presidents.
Meanwhile, on April 2, US President Donald Trump mocked French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during a private lunch, and once again imitated his French counterpart. The French president himself stated that Trump’s mockery of his marriage did not warrant a response.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy said he met with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit, which is currently taking place in France. The meeting was a follow-up to a closed-door meeting in which French President Emmanuel Macron also participated.
