US President Donald Trump will celebrate his 80th birthday today, June 14, with a spectacular event—a mixed martial arts cage fight on the famous South Lawn of the White House.

It was reported by the Associated Press.

A lavish UFC mixed martial arts show has been prepared for Trump’s birthday, where fighters, locked in an octagon made of wire mesh, will attempt to knock each other out with punches, kicks, and slashing strikes.

The US president will step out of the White House and find himself surrounded by Cabinet leaders, senior administration officials, Republican lawmakers, and over 4,000 spectators cheering from a temporary arena featuring a spaceship-like metal arch equipped with lighting, sound systems, and large screens.

"This event is a one of one event, incredible event. I love it," said UFC President Dana White, a close friend of the president.

Trump sought to link Sunday’s event—which features seven bouts running past midnight—to the larger, months-long celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

But, the publication notes, this is much more about celebrating himself, so much so that the G7 summit for leaders of industrialized nations postponed its meeting so the president could attend his cage-fighting party and then fly straight to France for the meeting.

At the same time, the weather could significantly disrupt plans. Severe thunderstorms and powerful lightning have already derailed Friday’s event near the Lincoln Memorial, and the forecast for Sunday evening also looks ominous.

The publication notes that when Trump’s predecessor, President Joe Biden, celebrated his 80th birthday in November 2022, he hosted a private family brunch at the White House. When asked about this contrast, White House spokesperson Allison Schuster responded that this event “will be one of the most entertaining nights in American history,” and noted that the timing was right.

“Having this spectacle take place at the people’s house on Flag Day during our nations’ semiquincentennial anniversary is a fitting tribute,” Schuster said in her statement.

Discussions and Criticism Surrounding the US President’s Age

When Biden turned 80, he was the oldest president in US history and declined to run for office after a debate with Trump and a revolt among Democrats who believed he was too old to handle a second term.

Trump has now displaced Biden as the oldest person elected US president. Under the Constitution, he cannot run again because this is already his second term in office, yet he constantly toys with the idea in public.

Meanwhile, polls show growing public skepticism about Trump’s mental and physical health—echoing the concerns Biden faced when he turned 80.

A Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted in April showed that less than half of American adults believe Trump has the mental acuity or physical health to effectively carry out the duties of the presidency.

Following an examination of the White House leader, Donald Trump’s physician stated that the US president is in “excellent health” and “fully fit” to perform the duties of the commander-in-chief.

Trump’s lavish 80th birthday celebration is seen as a distraction

The publication emphasizes that the UFC event is an apt metaphor for Trump’s aggressive political style. He is just as much a fan of cage-fight-style politics as he is of cage fights themselves. But Trump has also long been a master of political distraction, deliberately encouraging people to focus on something else rather than his presidency when things aren’t going well.

In particular, the war in Iran continues, despite Trump’s regular assurances that its end is near. In addition, gas prices remain high and fears of inflation are resurfacing. And Trump’s approval rating is plummeting.

The AP calls the White House birthday party, which is “unlike anything America has ever seen,” an undeniable diversion.

"This is all distraction. This is a classic strategy. In ancient Rome, the phrase would be, ‘bread and circuses,’” said Mike Fontaine, a professor of classical philology at Cornell University, who compared it to gladiatorial combat in Imperial Rome, when fighters brutally beat each other for the public’s entertainment, with the aim of boosting the rulers’ popularity and suppressing potential unrest.

Trump claims that the UFC is covering the costs of the event, and although the total amount is not being disclosed, the National Park Service noted in a lawsuit that over USD 60 million and tens of thousands of man-hours were spent organizing the event, and that seven government agencies “allocated significant resources and manpower.”

On Friday, the UFC also announced that World Liberty Financial has joined the event’s official partners and will create a special USD 250,000 prize pool for Sunday night’s winners. This cryptocurrency company is owned by the Trump family, was founded in partnership with the president’s special diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff, and is run by his son Zach. Thus, the deal further blurs the lines between the Trump family’s financial interests and the events and construction projects that the president has prioritized and for which he has used government resources.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will send a letter by courier to US President Donald Trump on his birthday, as he celebrates his 80th birthday on June 14. In addition, Merz plans to personally present him with a gift amid an exchange of criticism between the leaders.
