Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has called on the European Union to start negotiations with the aggressor country russia. His words are cited by Euractiv.
Bart De Wever said that EU countries should elect representatives to negotiate with russia in order to participate in a peaceful settlement. According to him, the European Union has not yet been able to force moscow to retreat in the war against Ukraine.
"Since we are not capable of threatening Vladimir Putin by sending weapons to Ukraine, and we cannot choke him economically without the support of the US, there is only one method left: making a deal," the Belgian prime minister emphasized.
Bringing russia to its knees is possible only with "100% US support," Wever emphasized. In his opinion, the United States is not fully on Ukraine's side, sometimes seeming "closer to Putin" than to Kyiv. Without EU representatives at the talks with russia, the Americans will put pressure on Ukraine, Wever said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on March 9, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that trilateral talks between Ukraine, the United States and the aggressor country russia were postponed due to the situation around Iran at the suggestion of the American side.
On March 6, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that work on a peace agreement that would end the war in Ukraine continues.
On March 5, US President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not ready enough for peace talks and is an obstacle to them.
