German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly criticized the recent decision of the United States to temporarily lift sanctions against the russian federation. This is reported by Clash report.
Commenting on this news, the head of the German government emphasized that Berlin considers such a step to be wrong.
"This morning we learned about the US decision on sanctions against the russian federation. We believe that this is wrong," he said.
In addition to the issues of sanctions policy, the Chancellor expressed serious concern about the situation in the Middle East, where, in his opinion, there is still no clear understanding of when and with what strategy the fighting will end.
Merz emphasized that these key questions have not yet been answered, but clearly outlined the role of his country, stating that Germany is not participating in this war and does not plan to join it in the future.
Instead, Berlin's diplomatic efforts are currently focused on ending the conflict against Iran. In his address, the Chancellor called on Tehran to stop hostilities, abandon attacks on the Persian Gulf states, and stop destabilizing the entire region.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the United States has temporarily eased sanctions on russian oil: restrictions on its purchase and transportation by sea have been lifted for 30 days.
US President Donald Trump said that some sanctions related to the russian oil sector may be temporarily lifted to stabilize energy prices. At the same time, he did not rule out that some restrictions may not be restored at all.
