US President Donald Trump said Iran tried to assassinate him twice, he told ABC News' Jonathan Karl in a phone conversation.
"I got him before he got me. They tried twice. Well I got him first," the journalist quoted Trump as saying on social media X in response to a question about the liquidation of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The journalist noted that this was also a reference to what US intelligence agencies believe was a plot to assassinate Trump in 2024.
Speaking about who would take over after the Iranian leader's death, Trump added: "The attack was so successful that it eliminated most of the candidates for the Ayatollah's position. None of the ones we thought of will take his place, because they are all dead. The second or third in the hierarchy are also dead."
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Larijani, stated that Iran will not negotiate with the United States.
