US President Donald Trump has criticized French President Emmanuel Macron after he refused to support the Gaza Peace Council and suggested imposing a heavy tariff on the country's products.
This is reported by Bloomberg.
"Nobody wants him because he's leaving office very soon," Trump said after learning that Macron would reject his invitation.
He added: "I'll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagne, and he'll join."
The publication, citing a source close to Macron, reported that the French President does not plan to accept an invitation to the peace council. According to Macron, this charter goes beyond Gaza, and he is concerned that it could potentially undermine the authority of the United Nations, which is unacceptable for France.
The source also said Macron finds it unacceptable that Trump is trying to influence French foreign policy through threats and is determined not to give in.
At the same time, according to people familiar with the matter, Trump wants the full constitution and powers of the Peace Council to be signed in Davos on Thursday. But other invitees are also skeptical.
In addition to France, Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and Canada are also expected to decline Trump's invitation to attend, according to the sources.
Meanwhile, Trump confirmed that russian dictator vladimir putin has been invited to Trump's "Peace Council" for Gaza. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also been invited.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Trump previously mockingly parodied French President Emmanuel Macron while commenting on trade tariffs imposed by the United States during a speech at the Republican Party convention in the House of Representatives.
