French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz fear that the United States may betray the interests of Ukraine and the European Union during negotiations on ending the russian-Ukrainian war.
Salzburger Nachrichten writes about this with reference to the material of Spiegel.
Spiegel journalists have gained access to a transcript of a telephone conversation between Macron and Merz. The leaders believe that the United States could betray Ukraine and Europe in the course of negotiations with the aggressor country russia.
"There is a possibility that the United States will betray Ukraine on the issue of territory without giving clear security guarantees," Macron said.
Merz added that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing a great danger. He must exercise great caution in the coming days
"They are playing games with you and with us," Merz said.
These and other remarks from the minutes reflect the deep distrust felt in European capitals toward US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Even Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who has a good relationship with US President Donald Trump, spoke negatively about the US negotiators.
"We can't leave Ukraine and Volodymyr alone with these guys," Stubb said.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supported Stubb, emphasizing that Ukraine must be defended.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, today, on December 4, US President Trump said that the best moment for negotiations between Ukraine and russia has already passed
Also today, Ukraine's ambassador to the US, Olha Stefanishyna, said that Kyiv and Washington continue to work on a "peace plan," but there has been no major progress.
