After a visit to moscow and a meeting with putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the post-war security architecture should include making Ukraine a buffer between NATO and russia. He made the statement in written answers to questions from Welt am Sonntag.

He explained russia's position on NATO and Ukraine, and expressed the need to restore Ukraine's status as a buffer state.

"The Russians say that we, the West, armed Ukraine, de facto integrated it into NATO structures and intended to make it a de jure NATO member. This, they argue, upset the balance of power. The Western position is that Russia has not accepted the balance that emerged after NATO enlargement, and wants to occupy Ukraine and eliminate its status as a buffer zone, and from there take the next steps to prepare an attack on NATO territory. The only possible sustainable solution is for the post-war order to be based on the fundamental principle that Ukraine will once again become the buffer state it once was," Orbán said.

In addition to the "buffer status," the Hungarian prime minister believes it is necessary for russia to retain control over the currently occupied Ukrainian territories.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Orbán and Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, flew to moscow to meet with putin and offered Budapest for talks on the war.

Putin assured Orbán that Budapest will be the venue for a peace summit on Ukraine.
