The unique Kinburn Spit and the world-famous Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve have been virtually destroyed as a result of large-scale hostilities unleashed by russian occupiers in the south of Ukraine. Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, announced this during a telethon.
He emphasized that environmentalists are sounding the alarm, trying to draw attention to the destruction of one of the most valuable nature reserves.
"We are talking about the same reserve - Askania-Nova. Environmentalists have already sounded the alarm and asked me to draw attention to this topic, because, unfortunately, it is not discussed much in the media," Pletenchuk said.
Pletenchuk also added that the fighting also has a direct impact on the ecosystem surrounding Crimea:
"He also emphasized that the Kinburn Spit has been virtually destroyed. At the same time, it is impossible to say whether and when the reserve (Askania Nova - ed.) will be restored. The fighting around Crimea also has a significant impact on the flora and fauna."
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the russian occupants looted the Askania-Nova reserve in the Kherson Region, so it no longer actually exists.
On June 28, it became known that 12 Chapman's zebras were transported from the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve in Kherson Region to the Taigan Safari Park in Crimea.
Russian occupants took animals listed in the Red Book from the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve in the Kherson Region under the guise of an exchange.
Those were Chapman's zebras, American bison, Przewalski's horses and David's deer.
