Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to hold talks with the leaders of Canada, Japan, and Thailand after talks with Trump. This is reported by Reuters.
The deal, struck on the fly before Donald Trump's departure from South Korea, averted a global supply chain collapse. The agreement suspends Chinese restrictions on exports of critical rare earths, although the US president himself ignored the two-day APEC summit.
Strengthening global supply chains was a key theme of this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) talks in Gyeongju. The 21-nation economic grouping seeks to encourage cooperation and reduce trade barriers. However, amid rising geopolitical tensions, consensus is becoming increasingly difficult to reach, as decisions made at these meetings are not binding.
The United States is represented at the summit by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after Trump's departure for the United States.
"Changes unseen in a century are accelerating across the world," Xi said in a speech to the assembled leaders, calling for the defense of the multilateral trading system and deepening economic cooperation.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping is planning to hold his first talks with newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. One of Takaichi's first moves was to accelerate military buildup to deter China's growing aggression. The detention of Japanese citizens and Chinese restrictions on Japanese agricultural and seafood imports will also be discussed.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with Xi at 4 p.m. local time to restore broad cooperation after years of tension. On the agenda are China's anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports and Canada's 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.
Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is also due to meet with Xi in the afternoon. This meeting comes after Thailand signed an agreement to strengthen the ceasefire with Cambodia in the presence of Trump.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Trump explained why he did not meet with Kim Jong Un during his trip to Asia.
Meanwhile, Trump said after his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, that they had a long discussion about the russian-Ukrainian war and will work together to "try to resolve" it.
