Croatia will stop supplying pipeline oil to Serbia, as the Serbian oil refinery NIS has not received a license from the US Treasury Department and is subject to sanctions.

Croatian operator JANAF announced this today, October 9.

The company issued a press release stating that Serbia's NIS has not received a license from the US Treasury Department, which is required to continue transporting oil.

"Given that NIS has not received a license for the period after October 8, 2025, the sanctions against NIS have been fully implemented," the statement said.

These are the US sanctions of January 10, 2025, which were imposed on the energy sector of the aggressor country russia. The restrictions also apply to subsidiaries of russian companies. The Serbian NIS is 55% owned by Gazprom and Gazprom Neft, and therefore it is also under sanctions.

In January, the United States gave russian companies 45 days to withdraw from NIS shareholding, which was never done. At the same time, the introduction of restrictions on NIS was postponed eight times.

Commenting on the current situation, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that NIS will be able to operate without additional oil supplies until November 1. He added that there will be no problems with fuel (NIS owns a network of gas stations) in Serbia until the end of the year.

"We have enough reserves and people should not panic and worry about anything. Our reserves are full. We have a total of 342,000 tons of diesel fuel in reserve, more than 66 thousand tons of gasoline," Vučić said.

He added that Serbia will continue negotiations with the United States. In addition, Belgrade is waiting for russia's reaction to the imposition of sanctions against NIS.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 10, 2025, the United States announced the introduction of a package of sanctions against russia. The restrictions were aimed at energy companies, oil traders, and a number of officials from the energy sector.

Also, 143 tankers from the so-called "shadow fleet" were subject to US sanctions.
