New US sanctions affect tankers that provided 40% of russian oil exports by sea in 2024

New sanctions from the United States have affected 143 tankers from the so-called "shadow fleet", with the help of which the aggressor country exports oil bypassing restrictions. In 2024, these tankers provided more than 40% of oil exports by sea.

Reuters reported this with reference to data from the Kpler company.

Kpler's leading cargo analyst Matt Wright said that last year, tankers that fell under U.S. sanctions transported about 530 million barrels of russian oil. This is 42% of the total volume of oil exports by sea.

According to him, about 300 million barrels of oil were sent to China. Most of the rest of the oil was received by Indian refineries.

"These sanctions will significantly reduce the fleet of ships available to deliver crude from Russia in the short term, pushing freight rates higher," Wright said.

An unnamed Singaporean trader told Reuters that over the past twelve months, the above-mentioned tankers have supplied China with about 900,000 barrels of oil per day.

The agency's source believes that as a result of the new U.S. sanctions, there will be a sharp drop in the supply of russian oil to China.

Recall that on January 10, the U.S. Treasury Department announced the introduction of new sanctions against russia. Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, tankers of the "shadow fleet", oil traders and a number of companies fell under the restrictions.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 8, Reuters wrote that China's largest port operator closed its ports to tankers from the global "shadow fleet", which transport, among other things, russian oil.

We also wrote that in mid-December 2024, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions against another 20 tankers from russia's "shadow fleet."
