Poland's border closure blocked railway that carries 90% of goods between China and EU

Poland has closed its border indefinitely due to joint military exercises between the aggressor country of russia and Belarus, as well as an incident with russian drones. This has blocked a railway artery that carries 90% of rail freight between China and the European Union.

This is according to a material from Politico.

On this route, the volume of goods between China and the European Union increased by 10.6% in 2024, and the value of goods jumped by almost 85% to EUR 25.07 billion. This rail corridor now provides 3.7% of all trade between the PRC and the EU. Last year, this figure was 2.1%.

Due to the closure of the border, all goods were blocked, including urgent supplies such as medicines and food.

Poland's largest logistics operator PKP Cargo has warned that short-term delays can be managed. However, a prolonged border closure would lead to trade being redirected through Central Asia to Southern European countries.

Artur Kalisiak, director of strategic projects at the industry association Transport & Logistics Poland, told the publication that a complete border closure would pose a serious problem for the entire economy.

"This is a very complicated situation. The government says it is monitoring the situation and that the border will reopen when it is safe. That is all we know. From a business perspective, we know nothing," Kalisiak said.

The Polish government said the decision to close the border with Belarus will remain in effect until further notice. Since the date of the border opening is unknown, businesses have no clear idea whether they will receive compensation.

The day before, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration stated that the losses of companies will be assessed after it becomes clear how long the border will be closed.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the night of September 12, Poland announced the closure of the border with Belarus. The reason for this was the russian-Belarusian exercises "Zapad-2025".

Last Tuesday, September 16, Warsaw announced that the border with Belarus would continue to remain closed after the end of the "Zapad-2025" exercises.
