European Union refuses to comply with Trump's demands needed to tighten US sanctions against russia — Le Monde

The European Union will not comply with US President Donald Trump's demands needed to tighten US sanctions against the aggressor country russia.

The French publication Le Monde reported this with reference to its own sources.

The publication's unnamed interlocutors said that European diplomats rejected Trump's demand.

"This does not mean that we should not act, but for now there will be no excessive tariffs," the publication quotes one of the sources as saying.

According to another interlocutor, the introduction of tariffs on goods from India contradicts the interests of the European Union. Moreover, Brussels and New Delhi are working on a free trade agreement.

One of Le Monde's sources noted that Trump's demand is nothing more than an attempt to absolve himself of responsibility for the lack of real action against russia, which he has repeatedly promised to start taking. This will allow him to declare that the US is ready to tighten restrictions on russia, but the European Union is preventing this.

Trump promised to tighten sanctions against russia

Trump said on September 7 that the United States is ready for the second stage of imposing new sanctions against russia due to the continuation of the war in Ukraine.

A few days before that, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the head of the White House is considering new sanctions as a response to the russian federation's massive air attacks on Ukraine.

What Trump demanded from Europe to tighten sanctions against russia

Last Saturday, September 13, the US president demanded that NATO allies completely abandon imports of russian oil, as well as impose tariffs on goods from China and India in the amount of 50-100%.

According to him, it is after this that the United States will supposedly move on to the next stage of tightening sanctions against russia.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 14, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson said that new sanctions against russia will not be approved without Trump's approval.
