NATO fighter pilots used expensive AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles to destroy cheap UAVs because they should not think about their cost when it comes to protecting civilians.
According to RBC-Ukraine, Alexus Grynkewich, the commander of the United States European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, has stated this.
"When a fighter pilot is in the air or someone on the ground is defending the alliance, I don't want them to think about how much their weapons cost. I want them to protect our citizens," Alexus Grynkewich said.
He called the NATO aviation operation to intercept russian drones that violated Polish airspace a success.
Recall, the day before, the German publication Bild wrote that the F-35 fighters that participated in the interception of the UAV used AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. The price of one such missile is about EUR 400,000.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 12, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the launch of Eastern Sentinel Operation to strengthen the alliance's eastern flank after the incident with russian drones.
