The North Atlantic Alliance is launching an operation called Eastern Sentry to reinforce Europe's eastern flank after russian drones violated Polish airspace, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, Reuters reported on Friday, September 12.
Warsaw sees the drone incursion as an attempt by russia to test Poland's and NATO's capabilities in response.
"This is reckless and unacceptable. We cannot allow russian drones to enter allied airspace," NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said at a press conference announcing Operation Eastern Sentry.
NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US Air Force General Alexus Hrynkevich, said the alliance would "defend every inch" of its territory.
Allied countries joining the operation
Denmark, France, the United Kingdom and Germany have already agreed to join the mission. According to Rutte, other countries are also going to take on defense commitments.
NATO's top military official, Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Hrynkevich, who is a US Air Force general, said that the alliance will defend every inch of its territory.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on September 10, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces confirmed the violation of the country's airspace during the night attack by the aggressor country of russia on Ukraine.
On September 12, the number of reports of russian drones violating Polish airspace increased to 21.
Also on September 12, the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration reported that after the night incident, debris from eight UAVs and one missile of unknown origin were found in several regions of the country.
