Germany to invest EUR 10 billion in building new bomb shelters and creating public warning system

The German government has approved a plan aimed at modernizing the protection system in the event of disasters, crises or military operations. It provides for the allocation of EUR 10 billion by 2029.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said this in an interview with Bild.

According to him, the current system of protecting the population in the event of crises is extremely ineffective. Therefore, the Ministry of the Interior plans to conclude the so-called Civil Protection Pact.

"The Civil Protection Pact provides for investments in vehicles, skills and functionality. By 2029, EUR 10 billion will be allocated for the largest modernization of the protection system in the event of disasters, crises and conflicts," Dobrindt said.

He emphasized that this will be the largest stage of modernization of the system in recent decades. It is planned to purchase warning systems. These are sirens and equipment that will allow sending messages to citizens' mobile phones.

The Civil Protection Pact also provides for the purchase of at least 1,500 units of transport for the fire service, medical institutions and command centers. In addition, new shelters for the population will be designed and built.

According to Bild, thousands of sirens were previously distributed throughout Germany. They were dismantled because they were no longer considered necessary. A similar situation occurred with shelters. Currently, there are 579 public shelters in the country, which can accommodate only 480,000 people.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in July of this year, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Berlin wants to buy mobile launchers for Tomahawk missiles from the United States.

Recall, in March, the Minister of Health of the federal state of Bavaria, Judith Gerlach, called on the German government to prepare the healthcare system for a possible military conflict.

And at the beginning of the year, it became known that a territorial defense brigade would be formed in Germany, which would be responsible for protecting military and infrastructure facilities.
