German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that his country wants to buy the US mobile Typhon installations designed to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles.
According to Bloomberg, Pistorius stated this during a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Speaking to reporters, Pistorius said that the purchase of the missile system is aimed at deterring russia.
According to him, Berlin wants to show that it has the means to counter russian systems aimed at Europe.
"They have a deterrent effect. That's what it's about. The goal is not to use them, but to show their availability for conditional use at a critical moment," the head of the German defense ministry said.
He did not specify exactly how many Typhon missile systems Berlin wants to buy from Washington.
Typhon is a mobile ground-based installation designed to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles and SM-6 multi-purpose missiles. The installation is a ground-based version of the Mk 41 launcher used in ships.
The developer of the Typhon launcher is Lockheed Martin. The work lasted from 2020 to 2023, after which it entered service with the US Army.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in June of this year, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that in order to implement NATO's new plans, his country needs to increase the size of its army by another 60,000 people.
As we will recall, in May, Reuters wrote, citing sources in the German government, that Berlin wants to rearm the army by 2029 due to fears of a russian attack.
In March, German intelligence said that by the end of this decade, russia could start a large-scale war against the West.
