The path to peace in Ukraine remains open, but the leaders of Ukraine and the aggressor russia are not yet ready to meet, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. His words were quoted by Reuters on Tuesday, September 2.
Erdogan noted that he had discussed possible ways to end the war in Ukraine with russian dictator vladimir putin during a visit to China, after which he called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to him, talks between the russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul showed that the path to peace remains open.
"Erdogan said that he had discussed ways to end the war in Ukraine with russian president vladimir putin during talks in China and with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone, but the parties are "not ready yet" for a leaders' meeting," the report said.
Erdogan also stressed that Turkey advocates a "gradual increase in the level of negotiations" between russia and Ukraine in order to get results. However, ultimately any initiative must be considered at the level of leaders, for which there are no conditions yet, the Turkish President emphasized.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 29, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that russia no longer demands full control over four Ukrainian regions.
On August 12, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed his country's readiness to organize a summit of the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, russia and Turkey.
As we recall, on June 2, Erdogan announced his desire to turn Istanbul or Ankara into the center of a peaceful settlement of russia's war against Ukraine.
