Large-scale fires are now constantly occurring on the bottom of the Kakhovka reservoir, which dried up due to the russians blowing up the dam. This was reported by the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southern District on Facebook.
Thus, it is reported that the dried-up Kakhovka reservoir is now on fire, rescuers are asking not to complicate an already difficult situation.
"Kakhovka reservoir, bare bottom - after the destruction of the dam, we lost not only water, but also the natural balance. Today, these dry areas are regularly engulfed by fire. Fires arise suddenly, spread rapidly and leave scorched earth behind," environmentalists say.
It is also noted that the fires burn out plants that could have become the basis for restoring the ecosystem.
"The remains of reeds, deadwood, bushes are burning - what could still become the basis for the restoration of the ecosystem. Wild animals are dying, the habitat of birds and reptiles is being destroyed. Smoke pollutes the air, and rescuers are working in difficult and dangerous conditions," the report says.
The State Environmental Inspectorate calls on:
- not to create conditions for fires;
- to refrain from any actions that may lead to a fire;
- to take care of nature - we have no other like it;
- in the event of a fire - immediately call 101.
If you see a fire or its consequences - record and report it. Every signal is important.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on June 6, 2023, russian terrorist troops blew up the Kakhovka HEPP. It was previously reported that it would take 5 years and USD 1 billion to restore the Kakhovka HEPP.
On June 27, specialists from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine reported that the Kakhovka reservoir was turning into a river. In early July, it was estimated that the estimated amount of damage caused to the environment due to the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant by the russian occupiers is about UAH 146 billion.
