Russian dictator vladimir putin is unlikely to agree to the ultimatum on sanctions put forward by US President Donald Trump, sources close to the kremlin told Reuters on Tuesday, August 5.
According to the publication, putin is confident in his successes on the front and wants to fully occupy the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson Regions of Ukraine, after which he can talk about a peace agreement, one of the sources said.
"Putin's determination keep going is prompted by his belief that Russia is winning and by scepticism that yet more U.S. sanctions will have much of an impact after successive waves of economic penalties during 3-1/2 years of war," three kremlin sources said.
At the same time, putin does not want to anger the US President and understands that he may lose the chance to improve relations with Washington and the West, but considers his military goals more important. According to James Rodgers, author of the forthcoming book "The Return of Russia", if russia occupied four regions, the russian dictator could claim to have achieved all of his goals in the war against Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on August 5, Reuters reported that the kremlin was considering a concession to US President Donald Trump to halt airstrikes on Ukraine without halting hostilities.
On August 4, US President Donald Trump said that Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, would likely visit russia on August 6 or 7 at moscow's request.
Recall that on July 28, Trump announced that he was setting a new deadline of 10-12 days for the aggressor state russia to make progress in concluding a peace agreement with Ukraine.
