Two Wagner PMC soldiers who fought for the aggressor country of russia in Ukraine have been arrested in Azerbaijan. The move is a warning to all former Wagner members, who will now be treated not as veterans, but as war criminals. This was reported by Euromaidan Press.
Arrest of the Wagner fighters is the first time a post-Soviet country has prosecuted its citizens for joining a private military company. Ramil Aliyev and Ismail Hasanov served time in russian penal colonies before being recruited into Wagner PMC and sent to fight in Ukraine. They are accused of using firearms and explosives in Ukraine, as well as attempting to recruit others to Wagner PMC.
"The decision to hold Wagner PMC fighters accountable is part of a broader shift in Azerbaijan's stance toward Moscow. Instead of quietly distancing itself, Baku is now actively targeting russian influence on several fronts: military, political, and informational. The arrests are not just about justice or legality, they are about blocking russian leverage," the article says.

The publication noted that Azerbaijan's actions demonstrate courage in combating russian influence in the South Caucasus.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on July 1, russian journalists from Sputnik-Azerbaijan were detained in Azerbaijan and accused of working for the FSB of the aggressor country, russia.
On July 1, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed support to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the conflict with russia.
On July 20, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that his country was preparing an international lawsuit against the aggressor country of russia in connection with the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane.
