"I had a conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. I thanked him for his support for Ukraine, our people and our territorial integrity. I also expressed clear support from Ukraine in a situation where russia is bullying Azerbaijani citizens and threatening the Republic of Azerbaijan. I expressed our condolences to Azerbaijan in connection with the murder of the Safarov brothers on russian territory. I am sure that all the facts will be clarified. And justice is needed. President Aliyev and I have the same vision: the life and dignity of every person must be protected," he said.
Zelenskyy also reported that they discussed bilateral relations - energy and cooperation in the humanitarian sphere, agreed to hold a meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, and to intensify the work of government officials.
According to media reports, relations between Azerbaijan and russia are rapidly deteriorating after an incident in Yekaterinburg, russia, where at least two people were killed, three more were hospitalized after a mass detention on June 27, and in total, security forces detained more than 50 Azerbaijanis.
According to media reports, FSB and OMON special forces broke into the homes of people from Azerbaijan, and the detentions themselves were carried out, according to eyewitnesses, extremely harshly; during a raid organized by the FSB, brothers Hussein and Ziyaddin Safarov were killed.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in May, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev decided not to participate in events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in Moscow.
Last year, the russian military shot down an Azerbaijan Airlines plane. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev directly stated that the responsibility for the downing of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane, which crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan on December 25, 2024, "lies with russian representatives."
