Ukrainian jets inadvertently flew into Romania while repelling air strike

Ukrainian fighter jets inadvertently crossed the border and ended up in Romanian airspace while repelling a russian air attack, without posing a real threat to national security, human life or the country's cultural heritage. This is stated in a report by the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

It is reported that on the night of Sunday to Monday, July 20-21, at around 3:00 a.m., the radar surveillance systems of the Ministry of National Defense recorded air targets moving along different flight paths in Ukrainian airspace, north of the border with Romania, in the Maramures - Suceava area.

"During the operations conducted from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., 12 Ukrainian air targets were detected, which appeared in the airspace of Ukraine north of the border with Romania. Four of them inadvertently penetrated the airspace of our country for several minutes in the area of ​​ Sighetu Marmației and Viseu de Sus, without posing a real threat to national security, human life or the cultural heritage of Romania," the department reported.

In connection with the current situation, the Ministry of National Defense informed the structures coordinating civil air traffic for comprehensive monitoring of the situation. At the same time, at around 3:30 a.m., two Romanian F-16 aircraft took off from the 86th Borcea Air Base to conduct aerial reconnaissance, and at around 5:00 a.m., an order was given to take off two Eurofighter Typhoon fighters of the Italian Air Force, deployed as part of the 5th Police Combat Service. The Romanian Ministry of Defense also states that although Romania is not experiencing direct attacks, hostilities in Ukraine, in the immediate vicinity of the national territory, as well as attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure require measures to be taken to protect Romanian citizens and national infrastructure.
