Kyiv suffers one of deadliest attacks in a year – UN human rights mission

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) said that a combined missile and drone attack by russian forces on the night of June 17 was likely the deadliest attack on Kyiv in almost a year.

The HRMMU said this in a statement.

"In a countrywide assault last night, Kyiv bore the brunt. With at least 14 civilians reportedly killed and more than 100 injured, this is the deadliest attack in Kyiv in nearly a year," said Danielle Bell, Head of HRMMU.

The HRMMU team is working to verify the number of civilian casualties and assess the extent of the damage.

It is emphasized that the latest attack came amid an increase in russia’s night strikes across Ukraine in recent weeks, “swarming” cities with hundreds of drones and missiles. The attacks affected at least 30 locations in seven districts of Kyiv.

The HRMMU emphasized that Kyiv suffered a similar or higher number of civilian casualties on July 8, 2024, when at least 32 civilians were killed and 85 injured in an attack that also damaged the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital.

However, in addition to the civilian casualties in Kyiv, at least one civilian was also killed and 19 injured in Odesa, as well as in the Chernihiv and Kyiv Regions as a result of the use of long-range weapons.

During the first 17 days of June, at least 3,340 long-range drones (buzzer munitions and decoy drones) and 135 missiles were fired at Ukraine. The latest attack was the fourth time this month that russian forces have fired more than 400 rounds of ammunition in a single night. In comparison, russian forces fired 544 rounds of long-range ammunition in June 2024.

Before yesterday’s attack, the HRMMU confirmed that at least 29 civilians were killed and at least 126 injured in Kharkiv, Kyiv and other cities in June as a result of long-range weapons or their interception by shrapnel.

Thus, in the first five months of 2025, almost 50 percent more civilians were killed and injured in Ukraine than in the same period in 2024.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the night of June 17, Kyiv was subjected to one of the most massive attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion. Russian forces launched a combined strike with kamikaze drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, focusing on residential areas.

Russia used 472 airstrike means to attack Ukraine on the night of June 17. The main target was again Kyiv.
