US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said aggressor russia has promised to send the US "conditions they would require to achieve a ceasefire" with Ukraine after a phone call between President Donald Trump and russian president vladimir putin.
This was reported by Politico.
"As far as we understand, the russians are going to write the conditions they would require to achieve a ceasefire, which would then allow for broader negotiations. We are waiting for those conditions, and then we will have a much better understanding of Mr. putin's calculations when we see what those conditions look like," Rubio said at a public hearing in a Senate committee.
Rubio, answering questions from Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations about the US approach to russia, defended Trump's efforts, while others insist on a more aggressive approach. On Tuesday, the EU adopted its own new measures against russia, and Republicans in Congress said they were waiting for the green light from the White House to impose bilateral sanctions on Moscow.
"He wants to keep the ability to influence both sides towards peace as long as possible," Rubio said of Trump, adding that "as soon as you do certain things," you lose influence over one of the parties to the conflict - a hint that sanctions against russia could jeopardize Washington's ability to talk to Moscow and Kyiv.
As a reminder, on May 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump had two telephone conversations - before and after Trump's conversation with russian leader vladimir putin.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Rubio noted, meanwhile, that US President Donald Trump believes that the aggressor country of russia is likely to walk away from peace talks on Ukraine if the US threatens new sanctions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States has not stopped supplying weapons to Ukraine, but there are currently no decisions on forming new packages.
