On May 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump had two telephone conversations - before and after Trump's conversation with russian leader vladimir putin.
Zelenskyy spoke about the content of the conversations during a briefing.
"I had two calls with President Trump today in different formats. The first call was, we talked about what is very important for Ukraine - a ceasefire, these are, in principle, unconditional things that we discussed in Istanbul and constantly before this," the report says.
The second point of discussion was the readiness of the United States of America to take more serious sanctions: "And I have already asked him to think about it and apply it if Russia does not support the ceasefire and does not want to end this war."
"Thirdly, I asked him before his conversation with Putin not to make decisions about Ukraine without us. For us, these are matters of principle and are very important. And we agreed that we would have contact after his conversation with Putin," Zelenskyy said.
According to Zelenskyy, the second conversation with President Trump - after the call to putin - lasted more than an hour and was also held in a different format. In particular, Trump and Zelenskyy directly participated in it, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Zelenskyy noted that the conversation was long and varied in nature. Zelenskyy said that Trump believes that the most important thing is direct negotiations between Ukraine and russia.
"In short, he believes that the Russian side will give appropriate signals, what they see, how the ceasefire and the next steps can be - their vision. I, in turn, asked President Trump, if the vision of the Russian side is not supported by the Ukrainian side - we would like us to have the opportunity to talk about it, and for the US to have the opportunity to consider this as the reluctance of the Russian side to end the war, because certain difficult conditions may be proposed," Zelenskyy explained.
Also, during the second conversation, the very possibility of serious, strong sanctions was discussed. He noted that he would not go into the details of the entire conversation.
"We are considering the possibility, I believe that this is a positive from our conversation, we are considering in any case the possibility of meeting all the teams again," he said.
Recall, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a meeting of Ukraine, russia, the US and European countries in Turkey, the Vatican or Switzerland is being considered.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, US President Donald Trump, after a telephone conversation with russian leader vladimir putin, said that Ukraine and the aggressor country russia would "immediately" begin negotiations on a ceasefire and an end to the war.
