Trump says US close to nuclear deal with Iran - media

Today, May 15, US President Donald Trump said that the United States is very close to concluding a nuclear deal with Iran. According to him, Tehran has "sort of" agreed to its terms.

This is reported by Reuters.

"We are in very serious talks with Iran about long-term peace. We are getting close to possibly concluding a deal without having to do it... There are two steps to this: there is a very, very good step and there is a violent step, but I do not want to go the second way," Trump said during a trip to the Persian Gulf, quoted by AFP.

It is indicated that an Iranian source familiar with the negotiations said that there are still gaps in the negotiations with the United States that need to be overcome.

Meanwhile, oil prices fell about USD 2 on Thursday on expectations of a nuclear deal between the United States and Iran that could lead to sanctions relief.

New talks between Iranian and American negotiators to resolve the dispute over Tehran's nuclear program ended in Oman on Sunday, and officials said more talks are planned as Tehran publicly insists on continuing uranium enrichment.

The Iranian President responded to Trump's comments on Tuesday in which he called Tehran "the most destructive force" in the Middle East.

"Trump thinks he can impose sanctions and threaten us and then talk about human rights. All the crimes and regional instability are caused by them (the United States). He wants to create instability inside Iran," said Masoud Pezeshkian.

An Iranian official said Iran is ready to make a deal with the United States in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. NBC reports that Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that Iran would commit to never building nuclear weapons and get rid of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, agree to enrich uranium only to lower levels needed for civilian use, and allow international inspectors to oversee the process.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 7, Trump announced that he had handed over a letter to Iran's leadership with a proposal to conclude a new nuclear deal. US President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran's leadership conclude a new nuclear deal within the next two months. He also threatened Tehran with consequences if it refuses.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the Islamic Republic rejects direct negotiations with the United States regarding its rapidly developing nuclear program.

However, on April 7, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States had begun direct talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program.

On April 12, US President Donald Trump's spokesman Steve Witkoff spoke briefly with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the first contact between the two sides since US President Donald Trump took office.

Meanwhile, Trump changed plans to officially rename the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf after strong opposition from Iran.
