US President Donald Trump said the United States has begun direct talks with Iran over its nuclear program.
He told reporters during a meeting in the Oval Office with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Sky News reports.
"We are having direct talks with Iran, and they have already begun. They will be held on Saturday. We have a very big meeting, and we will see what can happen. And I think everyone agrees that a deal would be better," he said.
He added: "I hope these talks will be successful, it will be in Iran's interest if they are successful. We hope that they will happen."
Asked for more details about the talks, Trump said they were taking place "almost at the highest level."
Netanyahu's visit to the White House was also scheduled to include a press conference, but it was canceled. Officials said the decision was made because he and Trump had "two back-to-back press conferences (an Oval Office greeting and a formal press conference) and they wanted to streamline the process."
Recall that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington for his second meeting since the start of Donald Trump's presidency.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 7, Trump announced that he had handed over a letter to the Iranian leadership with a proposal to conclude a new nuclear agreement.
US President Donald Trump demanded that the Iranian leadership conclude a new nuclear agreement within the next two months. He also threatened Tehran with consequences if it refused.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the Islamic Republic rejects direct negotiations with the United States over its rapidly developing nuclear program.
It was reported that Iran's Armed Forces have prepared missiles capable of striking positions linked to the United States, following threats of military action from US President Donald Trump if Tehran does not agree to a new nuclear deal on his terms.
