Ukraine pumped 258 million cubic meters of gas into underground storage facilities in April

According to ExPro calculations, Ukraine pumped 258 million cubic meters of natural gas into underground gas storage facilities (UGS) in April 2025.

This is reported by the ExPro publication, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

The report states that Ukraine began pumping gas into underground storage facilities on April 17, pumping 2.1 million cubic meters of gas into the UGS.

The volume of gas pumped into storage facilities increased by the end of the month - to 35 million cubic meters on April 30, which was the highest level since the beginning of this year's injection season.

Compared to April last year, gas injection volumes decreased by 44% - from 460 million cubic meters in April 2024 to 260 million cubic meters in April 2025.

The lower injection volumes are due to the later start of the injection season, which this year began on April 17, compared to March 31 last year.

It is noted that as of the beginning of May, 5.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas were stored in Ukrainian underground storage facilities, and the storage facilities are 18.4% full.

Compared to last year, there is 33%, or 2.86 billion cubic meters, less gas in the storage facilities.

Active gas reserves amount to over 960 million cubic meters as of May 1, 2025.

Ukraine needs to significantly increase natural gas imports to prepare for the next heating season.

Last year, at the beginning of the gas withdrawal season from underground storage facilities (November 1), 12.92 billion cubic meters of gas were stored in Ukrainian storage facilities.

To achieve this level of storage filling, 7.2 billion cubic meters of gas must be injected into the underground storage facilities during May-October.

Part of this volume will be covered by domestic production, which remains low after massive russian shelling in February-March.

The rest of the gas must be imported.

The required import volumes by early November range from 3 to 5 billion cubic meters.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Naftogaz Group has attracted a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in the amount of EUR 270 million, as well as grant financing in the amount of EUR 140 million provided by the Norwegian government through the NORAD fund for urgent gas purchases.

Gas storage operator Ukrtransgaz has started a new season of pumping natural gas into underground gas storage facilities (UGS).

Former Director General of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine Serhii Makohon said that Ukraine needs to find up to USD 3 billion quite quickly to start importing gas from May.
