Ukraine needs to quickly find up to USD 3 billion for gas purchases - ex-director general of GTS Operator of Ukraine Makohon

Former director general of the GTS Operator of Ukraine (GTS) Serhii Makohon said that Ukraine needs to find up to USD 3 billion and quite quickly to start importing gas from May.

He announced this on Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The report states that if in 2023-2024 the lack of imports was compensated by pumping out transitional gas reserves from underground gas storage facilities (UGS), now there is no such option, because the storage facilities are almost empty - 0.67 billion cubic meters as of April 23.

Makohon added that in the fall of 2021 there was a similar problem of lack of money, then the Government agreed to transfer almost UAH 48 billion (approximately USD 2 billion) of the GTS Operator's undistributed profits to the Naftogaz group to finance gas imports.

Now, unfortunately, such an opportunity no longer exists.

According to Makohon, mechanisms will now be sought to finance it through the budget, including various debt repayments or differences in tariffs.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Serhii Makohon said that the season for gas withdrawal from Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities has ended and Ukraine needs to create a reserve for the winter by November 1, 2025 at a level of at least 8.2 billion cubic meters.

The team of JSC Ukrtransgaz - the operator of Ukrainian gas storage facilities, which is part of the Naftogaz group - has started a new season of pumping natural gas into underground gas storage facilities.

Ukraine will have to purchase from 1 to 2 billion cubic meters of gas this year to prepare for the next heating season.
