Witkoff holds first talks with Iran under Trump administration

On Saturday, April 12, President Donald Trump's Envoy, Steve Witkoff, spoke briefly with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the first contact between the parties since US President Donald Trump took office.

This is reported by Politico.

So, the meeting is the beginning of a process that could lead to Trump and Iran delaying the escalation of tensions over Iran's nuclear program. Or, as the publication notes, lead to the risk of a wider regional war if the talks fail.

The parties spoke for two and a half hours in the so-called indirect talks, during which Oman acted as a mediator and shuttled between the parties.

The White House in a statement echoed comments Witkoff made earlier in the day in an interview with NBC News that "the discussions were very positive and constructive," and noted that Witkoff's "direct communication" with Araghchi "was a step forward in achieving a mutually beneficial outcome." The statement also confirmed that the two sides had agreed to resume talks next Saturday.

In a post on his Telegram account shortly after the talks concluded, Araghchi wrote in Farsi that "it is worth noting" that the two officials "spoke for a few minutes" in the presence of the Omani Foreign Minister. X's English-language post made no mention of the brief face-to-face meeting.

In an interview with Iranian state television, Araghchi also said that there had been four conversations with the Omani Foreign Minister, during which the officials conveyed their views to each other. The talks were "constructive," Araghchi said, adding that "the atmosphere was respectful and calm."

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 7, Trump announced that he had handed over a letter to Iran's leadership with a proposal to conclude a new nuclear deal.
