After the successful Ukrainian strike with two Neptune anti-ship missiles on the Moskva cruiser in April 2022, the aggressor state russia tried to save it, conducting a search and rescue operation.
The commander of the Ukrainian Navy Oleksii Neizhpapa has stated this in an interview with Krym.Realii.
According to the commander of the Ukrainian Navy, half an hour after the strike, russian ships, including frigates, missile boats and even a reconnaissance ship, set off to the scene.
"This detachment also included search and rescue vessels. There was also a search and rescue vessel there, which provided assistance to the cruiser so that it did not sink. Then they took it on a tugboat. As you know, they towed it towards Sevastopol. They tried to save it, but they could not. And during this time, from lunch to morning, there was enough time to remove people from the ship. And I think that part of the crew was saved. Yes, not all of them, of course. But how many of them were there specifically, I will never be able to tell you," he said.
The Moskva cruiser was hit on April 13, 2022, when the Ukrainian Armed Forces hit it with the Ukrainian Neptune missile complex. The ship was damaged and after some time it sank.
The then Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine, Oleksii Danilov, reported that the russians managed to rescue only 58 people out of 510 who were believed to be aboard the russian Moskva missile cruiser in the Black Sea.
On March 30, 2025, The New York Times reported that American officials were furious when they learned that Ukraine had attacked the russian Moskva flagship in the Black Sea. It was also claimed that the Moskva had been detected during routine reconnaissance by American and Ukrainian naval officers.
Naval spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk said that Ukraine itself had obtained the coordinates of the Moskva cruiser and the Navy had attacked it on its own, without US assistance.
