The administration of US President Donald Trump seeks to change the agreement on minerals, including access to Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
Financial Times reports this.
Washington wants Kyiv to agree to clear rules for managing a joint investment fund, as well as expand the list of objects that can fall under the agreement. This, in particular, may include American ownership of economic assets, including Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied that he had discussed with Trump the possibility of transferring the Zaporizhzhia NPP or other nuclear power plants to the US. According to him, Ukraine is ready to talk about investments in the modernization of nuclear power plants, but the issue of their ownership is not on the agenda.
Ukrainian officials express concern that the US may exert pressure to force Kyiv to agree to unfavorable terms. Especially after Washington temporarily suspended military aid.
Currently, negotiations between the United States and Ukraine are ongoing, covering a wider range of economic and security issues. The Ukrainian side notes that it has not yet been provided with an updated text of the agreement, although Kyiv is already ready to sign it.
Recall that the White House statement on the talks between Trump and Zelenskyy notes that Trump also discussed Ukrainian electricity supply and nuclear power plants. He said that the United States could be very useful in managing these plants due to its experience in the power industry and utilities. American ownership of these plants would be the best protection and support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
